A Beginner’s Guide to THC Cannabinoids in Hemp

When out shopping for Hemp Products, it is common to find products that focus on THC cannabinoids. While many shoppers know what THC is, seeing cannabinoid isolate products like THCA, THCV, or THCB products can feel like a whole new world. This is the perfect example of why education surrounding the hemp plant is so important.

At Panther Canna, we want all of our shoppers to be confident and informed while shopping for hemp-derived products. And for those new to hemp-derived THC products, this is the perfect place to start!

What is THC?

THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol. According to Live Science, “THC is one of many compounds found in the resin secreted by glands of the marijuana plant. More of these glands are located around the plant’s reproductive organs than in any other area.”

As of now, there are over 100 identified cannabinoids present in the hemp plant. While THC is the most prevalent cannabinoid in marijuana, it is found in lower concentrations in hemp. This difference is primarily due to centuries of selective breeding aimed at enhancing specific traits, such as CBD production, minor cannabinoid output, or fiber quality.

Among the more than 100 cannabinoids in hemp, only a select few have psychoactive effects, and these are the THC cannabinoids. Some, like Delta 9, are more abundant than others, such as THCV. Other properties of THC may include anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory effects. According to Harvard Health Publishing, “A highly promising area of research is its use for PTSD in veterans returning from combat zones. Many veterans and their therapists report drastic improvement and call for more studies, as well as a loosening of governmental restrictions on its study.”

It’s important to note that many studies examining the medical use of THC cannabinoids are still considered preliminary. However, the recent expansion of hemp legalization has made more biomass available for research purposes.

THC Begins as THCA

Before THC cannabinoids like Delta 8 or Delta 9 are produced, they first exist as THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid). According to WebMD, “If you smoke or vaporize THCA, it instantly converts to THC, which can produce a high.”

This transformation occurs through a process called decarboxylation. For decarboxylation to take place, THCA must be heated to a temperature between 220°F and 240°F. This is why smokable hemp flower and concentrates need to be heated for users to feel their effects.

Different THC Cannabinoids

There is a range of THC cannabinoids available. While Delta 9 and Delta 8 are well-known, there are also minor THC cannabinoids worth exploring, including:

  • THCP
  • THCB
  • THCV
  • THCJD
  • Delta 10
  • THCH
